The Functional Medicine Approach

One size doesn't fit all and that is true of medicine. Functional medicine is a systems based cumulative approach that focuses on identifying and treating the root cause of disease. Each symptom is a clue to the differential diagnosis which may be one or many contributing factors to an individual’s illness. Once the root cause has been found, a multi tier treatment plan is developed that may include a variety of therapies such as dietary changes, counseling, prescriptive medicine, supplements, and mobilization.

By addressing the individual as a whole without getting focused on the small details, a clearer outcome can be achieved.

Lifestyle changes are a key focus of every individualized treatment plan, which includes nutrition, physical activity, sleep and stress management/relaxation. How we cope with and manage stress has an impact on our hormones and overall health. This will all be taken into consideration when creating a treatment plan that will work for your individual situation and life. The end result for the patient is to improve their overall feeling of health and wellness.

What to expect & How To Start

For all new functional medicine patients, we require an initial intake where we can spend time reviewing active concerns, symptoms, issues, goals, and reivew relevant medical history. This give your functional medicine doctor a full view of the case to ensure the root cause can be identified. This generally takes 45-60 minutes to complete depending on the complexity of the case and the duration of they symptoms.

Further diagnostic testing may be required and lab work will be conducted to ensure the diagnosis is correct and the treatment plan will be effective. Labs always provide a base line for future lab work so it is always beneficial and informative. If your doctor has enough information after the initial visit, a treatment plan can be started before the lab work comes back. For many, the lab work is required to ensure the safety of any treatments.

Once the results are received, a follow-up visit will occur to review the results and to review the treatment plan. This visit will provide a more comprehensive individualized treatment plan to address your primary goals. This appointment may be 30 minutes in length. Follow up and support will be arranged after this on an individual basis.

As with any good treatment plan, nothing happens overnight. Most people will begin to see results 1-3 months after they have started they plans. Good long lasting results takes time but its worth it.
